While the rest of the world understood what happened in Honduras more than a month ago, that it was an attempt by President Manuel Zelaya to subvert the constitution and create a Chavez-like dictatorship, President Obama acted as if it were Zelaya who had been wronged. As the rest of the world scratched its head in wonder, and as freedom-loving Hondurans marched by the thousands, the Obama Administration acted as if the protesters were extremist mobs. Does that sound familiar?
Well, finally, after more than a month of dithering, our rookie president has figured it out:
The Obama administration has backed away from its call to restore ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya to power and instead put the onus on him for taking “provocative actions” that polarized his country and led to his overthrow on June 28.
Don’t applaud too soon, though. The new statement notwithstanding, Obama would still like to see Zelaya restored to power.
