Football has as much in common with reducing our demand for oil as wind and nuclear power does.
There is widespread confusion that if we push for wind and nuclear power, this will somehow reduce our dependence on oil.
Oil is used for purposes (e.g. transportation fuels) unrelated to how wind and nuclear power is used. Oil generally isn’t used for electricity generation whereas wind and nuclear are electricity generating sources. The bottom line is electricity generating sources aren’t somehow interchangeable with oil.
The Wilmington Star-News wrote an editorial a few days ago making the mistakes I have discussed. My letter to the paper addresses their editorial.
Any time you see the oil companies, Congress, and others try to muddle energy sources, remember to distinguish between electricity generating sources and energy sources used for transportation. This should help in figuring out what is a proper energy mix for the country.
