Western Carolina University Chancellor David Belcher advocated on behalf of a $2 billion bond proposed by Governor Pat McCrory. WCU would stand to get $114.9 million for a new science building out of the deal. The existing building was constructed in the 1970s, and enrollment in programs housed there has increased 69, 95, 75, 114, and 89 percent since then. Due to the state’s newfound strong financial position, it is estimated no additional taxes will be needed to cover the bond. So, I found myself thinking I could go along with this. Then, when I saw Phil Drake was onboard, I stopped worrying about trying to find a catch.
