Near the end of his book predicting America’s impending demise, titled We Are Doomed, John Derbyshire mentions that he’s advised his kids to seek their fame in fortune in government. Not that he’s a fan of big government, mind you. It’s the only place left where he sees any future for bright, upwardly mobile young people to launch a career.

Laugh if you like, but an illustration in the latest TIME supports Derbyshire’s point. It’s not posted online, though it’s tied to this article.

TIME creates a triangle diagram for each of 12 job sectors charting average salaries, number of U.S. positions, and unemployment. The larger the triangle, the better the job prospects.

Guess which sector had the largest triangle?

The industries that will probably attract the most workers will offer a mix of stability and good salaries. On that basis, government looks likely to attract a larger percentage of the workforce in the next decade.

Great.
