President Bush vetoed the 5-yr, $35 billion expansion of SCHIP. Bush believes that the program will offer “government-run” healthcare to too many Americans who do not need it.
Though Bush has finally found his limited government side, the Democrats are pushing for an override and will probably get it (they have the votes in the Senate and working on the votes in the House) because their campaign is very mobilized and it speaks to many Americans.
The danger of this program is not just poorly run government health care for children, waste of government money that could be used on other things, or the obvious problems with the bill. The real danger lies in the fact that if this program passes, it opens the door to a strong campaign from Democrats and big government Republicans for universal health care.
America seems to be sliding down a slippery slope to an even bigger, more inefficient government.
