Mark Chilton, former mayor of perhaps the most liberal town in North Carolina — Carrboro — was elected Orange County’s Register of Deeds last night. According to the Herald-Sun, Chilton is vowing to break the law and issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
Chilton said in an interview Tuesday night that he believes that North Carolina’s constitutional ban on gay marriage is “clearly contrary” to the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“I’m planning on taking them and signing them and issuing them,” he said. “Based upon my reading of federal decision up to this point, I believe this is what the U.S. Constitution requires me to do.”
Bottom line: Orange County liberals have elected a person who shows no respect for law and has vowed to simply ignore the law rather than work to change it.
