Activists in the landfill world are full of beautiful rhetoric about the evils of landfills, how wonderful recycling is and how people need to stop companies who deal with trash.
LAUREL HILL ? About 50 environmentalists from Scotland and
Richmond counties gathered at the Laurel Hill Community Center on
Tuesday night to listen to the activist who brought national attention
to Love Canal, a toxic waste dump in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The event was part of the eight-county tour called Don?t Dump on Us: Keep North Carolina Healthy. The
tour calls on lawmakers to keep large,
commercial landfill companies out of the state and establish a
statewide solid waste policy that includes recycling programs.
The tour began two weeks after state legislators passed a law that
would make it harder and more expensive for landfill companies to build
in the state.
The bill adds a statewide disposal tax and
increases the number of hoops a waste management company has to jump
through to obtain permits.
Sadly, these folks don’t realize that a great deal or recycling ends up in landfills because there aren’t markets for some recyclable materials. And the entire tour never has to be responsible for NC trash! In fact, it’s highly likely that we’ll be paying 2-6 times as much in the near future to get rid of waste because of such activity. Landfill companies will gladly not do business in NC and force us to pay handily to waste fuel and energy to get our trash to another state.
