The JLF has published a Spotlight report by Sarah Curry arguing against an occupancy tax increase in Haywood County. Of course I’m going to agree with the bulk of the paper. The only matter about which we disagree is she thinks a referendum should decide whether or not the occupancy tax is increased, and I think those who pay the tax should do the voting. Rather than compiling glossy photos of people with silly grins, why doesn’t the TDA, in the name of transparency, set up a gatekeeping web site where they sell official passports that legitimize tourists. Those caught wandering around without could be fined to generate more revenue.
