Meck Deck passes along the WCNC report on The Vue, Charlotte’s Uptown urban living status symbol. Out of 408 units —hang on to your hat —–20 are inhabited. Greensboro’s Center Pointe is only one third full, although developer Roy Carroll has paid the bank.

Meanwhile, the Biz Journal breaks the story on the proposed 240-unit Plant 64 project in downtown Winston-Salem, while the Journal follows up.

The project is supposed to compliment Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Bio Tech Place project in Piedmont Triad Research Park. The Journal reports developer Tom Niemann “had been the lead developer for the Civic Plaza mixed-use project for 3½ years,” but was dropped in April 2009 after missing a deadline for securing final financing for the $90 million project.” Niemann also said he would seek tax credits and HUD funding to help out with the $60 million project.

Downtown W-S boosters tout the project as helping meet pent-up demand for downtown living. I’m skeptical, but I’ve also heard where Greensboro’s downtown apartments are doing well —perhaps developers have gotten the message that apartments are preferable to because people just aren’t interested in investing in so-called urban lifestyle projects.
