In his Friday column Sheldon Richman argues that we shouldn’t trust in the Constitution (or any piece of paper) to safeguard liberty. I agree.

If the mass of the people believe in freedom and individual rights, it won’t matter what a formal governing document says. Conversely, if the mass of the people believe that coercion should be used in many ways “for the good of society,” trying to keep government limited with a fancy document will be futile.
