I was just thinking about how we haven’t heard much lately about Winston-Salem Warthogs owner Billy Prim’s taxpayer-funded downtown stadium project.
Speak of the devil, the City-County Planning Board officially approved zoning for the project, with a couple of conditions:
As part of the rezoning request, the planning board agreed for Watkins Street Park to be sold to the Brookstown group. The half-acre park is on Granville Drive.
In exchange, the developers have agreed to include at least 0.6 acres of open space in the ballpark complex.
The planning board also asked Brookstown to try to preserve some of the historic nature of the area. The planning staff has recommended that a historic marker be placed to commemorate the area as one of Winston-Salem’s historic black neighborhoods.
The board also wants Brookstown twork with local organizations that may want to move a historic shotgun-style house on Watkins Street or, at the very least, photograph it before it is torn down.
Also note planning board member Carol Eickmeyer’s concern over the lack of details provided by the developers.
