This article addresses housing on my street. If somebody works 1-3 jobs available to non-professionals in the Asheville area, this is what they can afford. I have a good deal on an attic apartment and a landlord who fixes things when they break. However, if people want fancier digs, they can either apply for housing assistance or get a professional degree to qualify for elitist housing, which celebrates Asheville’s unique sense of place.
In the meantime, Councilwoman Robin Cape is calling for a moratorium on development downtown. Local Progressives want no more development until the downtown master plan is complete. The master plan will no doubt reflect council’s smart growth vision with affordable (subsidized) housing requirements.
