The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which reportedly spent between $80,000 and $100,000 trying to push Cal Cunningham to the Democratic nomination to challenge Richard Burr and Mike Beitler in the fall, quickly began to heap praise on winner Elaine Marshall, who convincingly trounced Cunningham 60 to 40 percent. From politico:
“She is a proven reformer who has taken on the special interests in her state, and has cracked down on lobbyist activity, insurance company abuses and excess on Wall Street,” said DSCC Chairman Robert Menendez. “Voters will face a choice between a Democrat who has focused on creating jobs and the needs of North Carolina’s middle class and a Republican who puts partisanship ahead of doing what’s right.”
The question is, with the DSCC needing to help defend seats that have typically been safely in the blue column — Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid for example — will the DSCC pour cash into Marshall’s campaign, or will national Democrats write off the race?
