September 17 is Constitution Day. To celebrate, the Buncombe County Action Club will be signing a contract with Republican candidates for office. The terms are simply that the candidate promise to uphold the US Constitution or lose the support of the local party.

It’s sort of like telling high school kids they aren’t supposed to cheat on tests. If they cheat, it isn’t because they haven’t been told it’s wrong. However, we skate on too thin ice these days to attack anybody who wants to call attention to the fact that this country has a Constitution, and it would be an amazing tool for keeping tyrants in check should anybody care to adhere to it. The oath of office is pervasively broken. Every meeting opens with a pledge to the Republic that was broken at the last. At least there are supposed to be consequences for breaking the contract.
