The 4th District race for Congress may be more interesting than many folks thought it would be, considering that the district is known for its liberal politics. The district encompasses a big chunk of the Triangle and pits longtime Democratic incumbent David Price against Republican B.J. Lawson. In 2008, Lawson lost to Price 63 to 37 percent. This election cycle has much different dynamics, however.

First to the Daily Tar Heel for a story about an internal Lawson poll that reportedly shows a tie.

If a new poll is to be believed, the race in North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District just became closer than anyone expected.

Republican challenger B.J. Lawson’s campaign released internal polling data Tuesday that puts him in a virtual tie with U.S. Rep. David Price, D-N.C., with only four-tenths of a percentage point between them.

The News & Observer wrote about the poll as well. You’ll find the blog here, along with a link to the poll itself.

Then there’s the Duke Chronicle story about Rep. Price’s appearance on campus at an event sponsored by the Duke Democrats and Duke Political Union. Rep. Price acknowledged he was there to speak about congressional issues as well as the campaign, yet the story does not mention his opponent, Mr. Lawson. Curious.

Bottom line: this race is shaping up to be more interesting that first envisioned. Stay tuned.
