Meet Adam Shepard, Raleigh college grad (Merrimack College) and otherwise well-off, who opted to go slumming in Charleston with $25 to his name to see what would happen.

After 10 months of day laboring, scrimping, and living at a shelter, Shepard had an apartment, a pickup truck, and $5000 in the bank. In otherwords, the social safety net — which included Food Stamps at first — worked and Shepard took it from there.

The trajectory includes a new book Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25, and the Search for the American Dream, which sounds damn interesting. Watch the left go on the offensive to attack Shepard and his mortal wounding of their picture of modern American life.
