The N&R officially confirms what we already knew: Greensboro City Manager Rashad Young is leaving for Alexandria, Va.
Both the article and op-ed page editor Allen Johnson (unposted) mention the fact that the conservative Greensboro City Council never asked for Young’s opinion about whether or not to reopen the White Street landfill. Johnson writes:
Where city leaders did err in managing the manager was not making the fullest use of his talents. Some members of the council presume to know more than they do and did not take full advantage of the knowledge, experience and judgment they had in Young.
…They held a long, hot debate about the reopening the landfill at an Aug. 23 briefing, yet didn’t consult for his opinion even once.
The assumption seems to be that Young would have recommended against reopening the landfill. But what if he had recommended reopening it, in effect upholding city staff’s initial recommendation that the landfill not be closed to begin with?
