The simplest explanation is that elected Republicans have no principled belief in smaller government. Sure, the overall cost might give them more pause than found among Democrats. But as we’ve seen most recently with the smoking and annexation issues, there is virtually no interest in limiting government to only those things private citizens cannot do for themselves.
The vast majority of Republican office holders worship at the altar of government and seek to serve the system rather than their fellow citizens.
