There seems to be something about “celebrityness” that makes its possessors think that others are impressed and influenced by their utterances in fields outside of their ken. Why should anyone with an IQ reaching to two digits CARE who Bruce Springsteen (or Al Franken or Jeannine Garofalo or the Dixie Chicks….) favors for the presidency? If Springsteen held a press conference to say that he disagreed with Stephen Hawking’s cosmological theories, would anyone be swayed?

I can respect a real artist who attempts to convey his view of the world through his writings, paintings, compositions, or other forms, even if I think his ideas are pure bunk. But when celebrities try to capitalize merely on their public stature in order to let the rest of us know how they feel about this and that — it’s time to change the channel or hit the delete button.
