Mitch, there is doubt about whether congestion will be relieved by the Clayton Bypass or just shifted. Sure, the 10.7-mile new highway (70 m.p.h. — very nice, as I tested it yesterday) alleviates the many chokepoints that arose for drivers on old (now Business) Highway 70 through Clayton, where traffic lights have increased in number over the years. But the solution for engineers was to dump that traffic onto I-40, three miles southeast of the Highway 70 interchange in Garner, without widening the Interstate to accommodate the new traffic. So the effect is likely to shift an old problem to a new location.

In other words, it negatively affects my commute now!
