I argued in this paper back in 2003 that National Board certification was much ado (and expense) about nothing. Going through the steps required to obtain certification does not ensure that a teacher will become any better than before he started it. All it demonstrates is that a teacher is good at playing this particular game — saying the things that the National Board’s evaluators want to hear. There is absolutely no connection between student achievement and whether or not the teacher is granted this certification.
