Jesus had a direct word for both Sen. Kerry and former Sen. Edwards in Matthew 26, when a woman poured a whole bottle of expensive fragrant oil on His head. The disciples complained that the oil “might have been sold for much and given to the poor.”

Jesus’s response was, “She has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always.”

So much for those dreamers who expect to eliminate poverty completely some day. But that’s OK:

“Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?” (James 2:5)
