This seems to be a case of a politician getting caught up in his own artfully worded response to the tax question. “I have no plan to raise general-fund taxes,” or even “I have no plan to raise taxes,” doesn’t close the door on raising taxes.

All he’s saying is he doesn’t plan to raise taxes. This statement is true up to the point he decides he wants to raise taxes. That point might arrive tomorrow, it might arrive next week, or it might arrive after the election is safely over. Want to place a bet on the most likely option?

If/when he does decide to raise taxes, it will be easier for him to explain away his earlier statement than if he had given a Bush 41-style promise.
