Wake will continue to get by with ?socio-economic? coercive assignment policies as long as no one takes legal action to equate ?socio-economic? as a cover for race.
On September 21, 2001 the Charlotte/Mecklenburg system was declared ?Unitary,? the school board (which at that time I served as a member) tossed around the idea of assigning students ?like Wake? using socio-economics. The parents who won the lawsuit laughed and told the school board to go ahead and make their day!  These parents quickly informed the media they would pursue another lawsuit. The Mecklenburg School Board caved and the system now has neighborhood schools. Just a thought for those in Wake County who really want to end the hassle with pupil assignment, and make the system deal with student achievement issues. Take the system to court!
