The N.C. Democratic Party, under chairman Jerry Meek’s name, sent the following out via e-mail this morning:

Dear NC Democrat:

We?ve received some reports of calls to voters saying photo identification is required to vote. This is not true and we can only conclude that these are Republican voter suppression efforts.

Identification is only necessary if this is your first time voting…

We have also received confirmation that national Republican operatives are phoning voters at all hours of the night, especially at 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. to try and dampen Democratic turnout. These calls were made in the 11th Congressional District and began with ?Hello, I’m calling with information about Heath Shuler.? These calls were also reported in the 8th Congressional District.

If you are registered to vote, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR POLLING PLACE WITHOUT VOTING! Every registered voter is entitled to cast a provisional ballot….

The American people are tired of campaigns of lies, fear, and sleaze. Democrats won?t stand for it and will fight until each and every vote is counted! Vote today and fight back!

This looks like something that was probably written up weeks ago. If it’s such an urgent message, why isn’t it at least on the homepage of the state Democratic Party? Or even on their news release page?

GOP operatives calling potential voters in the middle of the night and early morning hours to dampen Democrat turnout? In the two most competitive Congressional districts in the state? That would be pretty stupid for them to do that, causing more harm than good to Republicans. Of course, no one is going to do anything to substantiate that claim either. Looks like a load of hooey to me.
