I must protest this misusage of the term “cage match.” It is much like what is going on with the use of the term “Diva” to refer to any woman who happens to be good at what she does–the domestic diva? please. A cage match is something that occurs in professional rasslin. Two men are placed inside the steel cage for a reason–so neither one can get out and no outsider can interfere. Also, it is important to realize that the cage itself is part of the match. Foreheads, noses, faces, etc. can all be smashed into it, rubbed into it, and raked against it. None of this fits the situations for which the cage match has been analogized on this blog. Much like the great real divas, present and past, who are being disrespected by referring to every talented woman who comes along, regardless of her profession, as a diva, so are the great grapplers who have had there heads smashed into the cold hard steel of a real cage in the name of sports entertainment being disrespected by the misuse of the cage match analogy on this blog.
