The N&R’s follow-up on Guilford County Register of Deeds Jeff Thigpen’s uncovering of possible mortgage fraud addresses a concern I had expressed earlier.

From the editorial in Saturday’s paper:

Thigpen’s list might embarrass some of the people whose names appear on it, along with their addresses and loan amounts. But they need to know. Thanks to Thigpen’s initiative, they should be aware that they may have trouble with their loans. He calls the issue a “ticking time bomb,” but there’s no way to know yet if or when it might explode.

…..The residents whose names appear on Thigpen’s list have no part in fraud except as possible victims. Maybe their loans are fine and they won’t suffer any harm. No one really knows.

Meanwhile, today’s front-pager (unposted) says several residents are unhappy about having their information released and have let Thigpen hear it. Meanwhile, County Attorney Mark Payne is catching up on the matter and —along with county commissioners —-will sort out the “legal implications and nuances of the matter.
