I know from talking to gay friends about these kinds of incidents that one aspect is often overlooked: It is not “very shocking” that such things happen at 2am when bars are closing.
Pretty much drunk fools are known to do stupid, violent things to innocent folks at 2am. If you are out in public at 2am, you are a target for something bad to happen to you. It is not a societal reflection on your lifestyle, it is not about repressed sexual urges, it is not part of a climate of fear. The world is this way.
