I think there’s no way any “guy” is getting that gig next, George.
Harvard has a Huge Debt to Pay to the academe’s Fainting Feminists; they simply have to hire a woman. And I strongly doubt the debt could be payed by hiring a woman like former NC State chancellor Marye Anne Fox, who’s now head of UC-San Diego, even though she is a highly decorated scientist and for that reason alone would seem to be the Anti-Summers. While at NC State, however, she was rumored to be considered for a position in the Bush Administration. Former UNC president Molly C. Broad might be an attractive candidate to Harvard, however.
Nevertheless, I think Harvard’s woman will be someone like Miami University president Donna Shalala, formerly of the Clinton Administration, whose current institution has an extreme speech code and has been embroiled in controversy for a double standard agaisnt conservative groups, and who, when she was head of the University of Wisconsin, nearly destroyed that institution’s particularly strong tradition of free speech (a tradition that is flourishing today, I’m happy to report).
