The citizens’ review committee investigating the brutal beating of Jill Marker wants to subpoena the Winston-Salem Journal and former reporter Phoebe Zerwick.

Publisher Carl Crothers says “the Journal stands by its belief that the press should not be forced to be an agent of the government.” I’m missing Crothers’ logic, considering the fact that the review committee, for which the Journal has been a tireless advocate, is supposed to circumvent the very government that has kept convicted Marker assailant Kalvin Michael Smith behind bars for more than 10 years now.

Looks like a case of media advocates getting a taste of the perfect world for which they so long. It doesn’t always work so well in reality. I’m afraid we’re all about to find that out on a much larger scale.
