Jerry Meek’s statement had a quote that I think actually captures the definition of liberalism as a set of beliefs, and that makes for a neat juxtoposition with conservatism. Meeks states:
“[Liberals] believes in the power of government to do good things — by creating opportunity, protecting freedom, and expanding the horizon of human achievement.”
Here’s the conservative/libertarian view:
“Conservatives believes in the power of individual liberty and free markets to do good things — by creating opportunity, protecting freedom, and expanding the horizon of human achievement.”
One cannot consistently believe in both of these simultaneously.
