If you?re a fan of National Review Online?s Jonah Goldberg, then you?ll enjoy his Corner post today on the subject of yet another leftist attempt to rehabilitate the reputation of the odious Herbert Croly, founder of The New Republic.
And if you?re not already a Jonah Goldberg fan, then by all means read the post ? it?ll help you get to know one of the funniest and most-insightful conservative writers on the scene today. A key passage:
…[T]his notion that Croly was somehow championing a grander American
vision has never been terribly persuasive to me. Progressives assert it
as a means of claiming that you can nakedly pursue Bismarckian
“socialism from above” or European social democracy while claiming to
be a great lover of America. But it’s always struck me as a weak case.
“I love America! That’s why we should be more like Belgium!”
