WakeMed and Rex Hospital both want to expand their rehabilitation facilities
to meet future demand, but only one will be allowed to. WakeMed would
spend $12.4 million to expand its rehab hospital. Rex would spend $4.9
million for a new building in Western Wake. The Certificate of Need
Board will decide which hospital will get to add 16 beds. Both expect
to open the new facility in 2008, but legal fights could delay that. In
the meantime, patients will continue to wait two weeks or head west to
Duke or UNC.
