The president sent out a missive last Friday asking us to urge our Congress people to vote in favor of very important legislation that would create jobs and green the country. I replied, saying I was at work and a direct link to a complete copy of the legislation would be helpful. I received a reply informing me the president gets more email than he can read, so it is likely mine might not be read, either.

Congress ended up passing the 1200-page bill by a narrow margin. Justifying the vote, legislators ignored the laws of economics. For one thing, gifts of newly-printed federal dollars are not creating the jobs they said they were supposed to. This bill promises to create jobs, too. The president asked us not to be led astray by persons insinuating that the socialization of green industries would not impede economic growth. Besides the indisputable fact that regulation impedes productivity, the bill aims to cut greenhouse gases by 83% by the middle of the century. Also, the bill will soak the rich, and the rich are evidently too stupid to pass increases in cost on to consumers.

Then, one might ask who gave the environment rights. Nancy Pelosi said the legislation “will take us into the future.” She blamed opponents jamming the phone lines for the close vote. Harry Reid hoped teamwork and bipartisanship would get the bill through the Senate.
