Every election season, and this one is no exception, Democrats seem to pull the same trick out of their hats when campaigning against Republicans–they accuse them of being libertarians. They do not call them libertarians directly, instead they accuse them of holding a whole series of libertarian positions that, unfortunately, Republicans, except for the possibility of Ron Paul, do not hold. And most Republicans will tell you, Paul is not one of them. So far during the 2010 election season I have heard Republicans being accused of wanting to abolish minimum wage laws, Social Security, Medicare, the Department of Education and most environmental regulations, among other things. The fact is that none of these are Republican positions, but they are libertarian positions. From my perspective, the Democrats, in making these accusations, consistently give the Republicans way more credit than they deserve. Heck, if the Republicans were anywhere near as good on the issues as the Democrats say they are I would have changed my voter registration a long time ago.
