The Rev. William Barber and the NAACP protested yesterday’s Civitas budget conference with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education:
(Barber) called the meeting part of a right-wing conspiracy to cut public school funding and return to neighborhood schools. The budget, according to Barber, is the “moral document” used to bring about those changes.
“That’s something we have to fight, not just in Wake and Forsyth (counties), but for the soul of the South. We in the South cannot afford to go backwards,” Barber said.
Winston-Salem Journal coverage quotes former Mayor Martha Wood as saying it would have been nice to include “someone from the liberal end of the political spectrum for balance.”
Anyone who follows closely knows that public education itself is the liberal end of the spectrum.
