An Air America source tells Fox News that talk-show host Randi Rhodes herself told Air America employees she had been attacked. That would explain where sub-host Jon Elliott got the idea she had been mugged by right-wingers:

The source said that Rhodes contacted several employees at Air America on Tuesday, and had told them that she was attacked but had only suffered chipped teeth, and would be seeing a dentist.

Her lawyer originally had this to say about the incident:

“We don’t know whether there was a deliberate intention aimed at her or whether it was an accident… she was pretty much, she was hurt badly when she fell and her face hit the ground,” lawyer Robert Gaulin initially told FOXNews.com, adding that people on the street came to her aid.

Use of the words “deliberate intention” certainly sounds like more than an accident, but Gaulin later told the Daily News that Rhodes had taken a fall while walking her dog. My question: If Rhodes simply took an accidental nose dive while walking her dog, why is her lawyer doing all the talking for her? Doesn’t that seem like overkill, especially at what a Manhattan lawyer must be charging per hour?

I don’t think we’ve heard the last of this.

Where does this bizarre mess go from here? It’s clear there is much more to this story than a sidewalk accident, the cover-up and attempted smear campaign is the real, ongoing issue now. Something doesn’t smell right.
