A reporter friend who used to cover the Alabama Legislature when I worked in the governor’s office there noticed that the richest members of the House and the Senate were the dumbest. Well, maybe not the dumbest, but not by any means to most brilliant, and there were several very brilliant lawmakers in that bunch (1974-81) who had made law review at some very prestigious schools. But the goomers who wore the plaid sport coats with striped pants and used incorrect grammar invariably had the greatest net worth.

This research doesn’t necessarily explain why this was the case, but it certainly validates my friend’s observations.
