I?ve seen a string of incidents lately where people do the right thing for the wrong reasons. Add the French to the list.

No, really. They just might reject the European Union constitution in a referendum this weekend. This is odd because French politicians have been among the driving forces behind creating an integrated EU as a counterweight to the ?American Hegemon.? From the perspective of U.S. foreign policy and the defeat of Islamofascism, a unification on those terms would not be a positive development, obviously. From a free-market perspective, the proposed EU constitution will also probably work to squelch useful competition among European states to provide the most congenial business climates for growth.

Are French voters have pangs of regret about sabotaging American foreign policy or creating a more statist Europe? No, many seem to be voting against the new constitution because they think it will bring American-style ?cowboy capitalism.? Uh, whatever ? just vote it down.
