Listen here for the hot Wray tapes released tonight by the Greensboro City Council. Here’s an excerpt from former Deputy Chief Randall Brady’s interview with an RMA agent:
BRADY:When the allegation of a black book come out, the chief held some meetings and wanted to know about the existence of a black book. In the briefings, nothing came out about a black book. All that was talked about was a lineup with x-number of photographs and such…..later I came in possession of it and I asked them. I said, well I actually asked Tom, I said you guys had mentioned there was no black book. I said and here it is.
Q: Was there ever any discussion between you and Chief Wray or others after the book was found, what to do about the book and about the allegation that there was this black book?
BRADY: He told me to secure it and be sure that I held onto it.
But by far the most bizarre tape released was a conversation between Brady and Det. Scott Sanders in the summer of 2004.. Brady was giving Sanders the 411 on a white female who, according to Brady, was harassing Wray, going so far as to move next door to him and claiming he was seeing prostitutes. Brady instructs Sanders to prepare a file on the woman — “You what kind of file I’m looking for,” he told the Sanders — in case she took her claims to the city manager’s office. The catch, according to Brady, was even though the lady’s a nut, she’s also very articulate and could her allegations of Wray seem credible, even if they weren’t.
Not an unreasonable request, to keep tabs on someone stalking the chief of police. The problem arises when Brady says they have to figure out a way to get her kicked out of the “freaking place” even if “we have to do something to make it look like she’s done something.”
“Some in the community have tried to paint the problems in the police department as white versus black. In truth, it is my belief that the problem was simply of right versus wrong,” Johnson concludes.
Hoggard concludes Wray needed to go, while the taxpayers should never pay Brady another cent.
