As if being forced to sort old yogurt containers, beer bottles, and cardboard isn’t enough, next month San Franciscans will have to start composting as well.

Starting Oct. 21, every home and business in the city must have three separate color-coded bins for waste: black for trash, blue for recycling – and now green for composting. Failure to sort trash initially will result in several warnings, but ultimately could lead to fines of up to $1,000 in egregious cases.

In addition to all the obvious objections, I’ll add one that most people probably won’t consider: are people who already compost (voluntarily, in their back yards) required to surrender their valuable garden fertilizer to the SF authorities? And will the city be profiting from all this black gold that it’s extorting from its citizens?
