Prepare to pay sales tax on downloaded music and software, warranties, building repairs, moving expenses, and information technology services if the tax hike discussed by the NC Senate Democratic Caucus goes through. It still includes higher taxes on cigarettes and alcohol, though it eliminates the sales tax on groceries.

Casual readers of the news would be excused if they did not know the tax plans are tax hikes. Gary Robertson buried the $600+ million per year hike in the fourth paragraph of his AP story and started with an innocuous-sounding description of reform and rate reductions.

Roy Cordato has already shown what real tax reform can look like – and it does not involve taxing North Carolina six times more than Washington, DC, will cut in spending. And yes, that’s a lot of money.
