At the General Assembly today, Senator Hoyle helped push forward Senate Bill 1630. This bill addresses how Baked Goods are taxed by the state. Due to sloppy interpretations by the Department of Revenue, bakers who sell their breads in store must charge a 7.75% sales tax while grocery stores who could purchase this same bread wholesale, must only charge 2%. The difference is putting great strain on small businesses and many have been audited due to misinformation they received from the Department of Revenue. This bill, which will exempt baked goods from sales tax and use tax, will most likely be voted upon tomorrow.
