Liberals aren’t the only Americans asking questions about federal government policies adopted in the name of increased security.

Fans of Fox News legal analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano might be surprised by the vehement attacks the judge launches against the government in the pages of his latest book.

A Nation of Sheep (Thomas Nelson) urges Americans to shed their wool and become “wolves” who challenge increasing government intrusiveness.

The whole purpose of the Constitution is to limit, separate, diffuse, and check the use of power. The Founders insisted on this. … They knew that an enforceable constitution that guaranteed natural rights, that specifically delineated who had the power to do what, and that expressly forbade the government from interfering with the exercise of natural rights would be the best instrument for preserving human freedom.

They were right.

But, with the passage of time, with government assaults on liberty during wartime accepted by sheep-like Americans, and with a wink and a nod, government lawbreaking has become the rule, fear the means, power the end, and liberty the victim in the everyday operation of government in America today.

People who believe 9/11 has justified increased security measures will undoubtedly take issue with much of Naplitano’s argument. But those who love liberty will accept at least some of his narrative as painfully true.
