Two unnamed companies are asking Guilford County for a total of $300,000 in economic incentives. Commissioner Billy Yow says that’s “absurd.”

Meanwhile, more on the proposed new GCS headquarters. It’s good to see school board expressing skepticism, but whether or not they’ll actually stand up and oppose it when the time comes remains to be seen.

Over at Chalkboard, N&R education reporter Brian Ewing says he’s “spoken with the folks at the Community Foundation and Gate City Company who developed this plan and they claim it can be pulled off without one penny coming out of the school board’s budget.” What else are they going to say?

No one’s used the term, but this is basically a tax increment financing scheme, meaning the developer who builds on the site of current school administration building gets to pay for the system’s new office.

But who’s going to build? Remember there’s an empty lot within sight of GCS headquarters that was supposed to be a knockout mixed-use development because it was located next to the baseball stadium.
