I am stunned by this story out of Durham. I urge you to read the whole story since it is outrageous and an excerpt will not do this justice — no pun intended. Both the city and county are involved in setting up a warrant control office.

Where are the priorities? And why have the city and county waited so long to address this? While the county is evidently the primary entity on this, it obviously impacts the city and all residents.

Keep in mind that while 72 boxes of unserved arrest warrants have been collecting dust, city officials didn’t have any trouble spending $700,000 on a consultant to explain why their capital projects don’t finish on time. I could have suggested — at no charge — that the city simply terminate consistently low-performing employees who are unable and/or unwilling to meet deadlines.
