Kudos to Matthew Marley of Alamance County. He’s made it through the first two rounds of the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. Matthew is sponsored by the Burlington Times-News.

Years ago when I worked for The Arizona Republic, I accompanied the Arizona student to the national event. It was a terrific opportunity and experience. We should thank newspapers around the country who continue to fund local and state spelling bees so these kids can participate.

By the way, Matthew is home-schooled, a growing educational option in our state. Congratulations to his parents for their commitment to his education.
