Department heads in Haywood County presented the commissioners with requests for expanded budgets. Most notable might be the demand for more government workers to handle the increased caseload for food stamp recipients. For those who do not yet get it, the idea is to raise taxes on the working people so those on the margin will need to get food stamps. The process is known as erosion. Also in need of more staffing is the police department. Back in those geeky-square days of Ozzie and Harriet, they had a thing called families that kinda sorta put a lid on a lot of mischief before it got out of hand.
Anyhoo, looking at the world from the eyes of one who must pass through metal detectors to establish innocence . . . I was scathed at that Asheville City Council meeting yesterday when the presenter explained the city had been cutting back so terribly, its only choice, if pending legislation passes, is to take more money away from people who have been cutting back so terribly, too.
