A resident of Hillcrest informed me that protesters marched against the installation of surveillance cameras. (The news article I read only mentioned a cost escalation due to vandalism.) A sizeable proportion of protesters did not live in the neighborhood, but one thing they did was dig up the electrical lines. Reportedly the group ganged against Housing Authority Director Gene Bell when he came to the neighborhood to address the issue. My informant said he/she/it wants the cameras to help deal with the drug dealers. One man using a personal camera caught the dealers intentionally uprooting all the plants in his little garden. My informant continued his/her/its complaint, tallying the shootings and other action-packed events the hood has sustained in the past few years.
