The Camden County Board of Commissioners, at the urging of the JLF, voted, 5-0, May 7 to reconsider ‘smart growth’ zoning. Leading up to the vote, Carolina Journal Editor Richard Wagner had contacted one of the county commissioners for a story Wagner was writing. The commissioner, Melvin Jeralds, mentioned that despite the county’s enactment of some restrictive zoning measures and building moratorium over the past three years, the issue was far from settled. The JLF was asked to provide alternative ideas for planning and development. Aside from planning problems, many North Carolina municipalities are encountering resistance towards incorporation. Chad Adams has been speaking to Hampstead residents about this very issue. Jeff Taylor discussed Charlotte’s Whitewater Center, which was mentioned in the Wall Street Journal this week as an example of a risky private-public partnership project, on Charlotte’s Morning News on WBT 1110AM. Jeff also spoke with Fox News WCCB 18 on the transit tax repeal and petitions drive that’s heating up in the Queen City.
